Discussion and consideration of the following:

1.         Presentation from Wakefield Beasely and Associates/Beck Design Group, Inc. regarding potential use of the former detention center property, 1812 Newcastle Street.

Michael Beck, Beck Design Group, Inc., addressed the Board regarding the former detention center building. He said the walls were not solid concrete as was originally suggested. He said the building could be renovated for other uses. He suggested repurposing it for retail shops, a hotel, or a culinary school.

Commissioner Browning asked that a meeting be scheduled to allow the Board, especially the two new commissioners, to hear the result of the space needs study conducted by the Heery Design Group. This study recommended the county keep the former detention center property for future office space and court use by the county.

2.         Discussion regarding the Animal Control Advisory Board.

Commissioner Strickland asked the commissioners if they wanted to sunset the Animal Control Advisory Board and allow the group to create a separate entity. This separate entity could still make recommendations to the Board of Commissioners.

Although it was not a public hearing, the Board heard from the following citizens who requested the Board keep the advisory board in place: Shelley Stephens, Jill Wright, Bill Gussman, Sherry Coleman, and Jane Frazier.

It was decided to keep the advisory board intact and make the appointments to the advisory board at the June 18, 2015, meeting.

3.         Receive an update on the proposed amendments to the Zoning Ordinance.

Community Development Director David Hainley provided an update on the proposed amendments to the zoning ordinance.

EXECUTIVE SESSION/POST EXECUTIVE SESSION ACTION

The Board did not hold an executive session during this meeting.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
